Bio
“An opera begins long before the curtain goes up and ends long after it has come down.” – Maria Callas
“We break a lot of rules; it’s unheard of to combine opera with a rock theme, my dear.” – Freddie Mercury
Emily Rose Mandell is not the typical classical music conservatory graduate. She may have been trained professionally in opera, but she’s also a singer-songwriter, equally at home performing with an orchestra in a grandiose opera house as she is as a solo act at a local bar. Her personal mission is to introduce elements of old-world classical music into modern pop music, presenting a traditional art form to new audiences by giving it new, reimagined life. Emily believes that there is more that ties all of us together than we realize, and this is why her music can speak to fans of the different disciplines that she is intent on blending together.
Emily graduated with a degree in classical voice performance from Oberlin Conservatory. She has performed at the London International Choral Festival, the Tanglewood Festival with the Boston Pops, and at Carnegie Hall with the Oberlin College Choir. She is currently focused on writing and recording original pop music with operatic components and is presently an instructor at Village Music in Wellington. One of her songs was recently placed on the Official Ballot for the 67th Grammy Awards by the Recording Academy.
Early musical influences for Emily include the classic trinity of pop divas (Whitney, Celine, and Mariah), as well as classic sopranos from the world of opera (Callas, Price, Caballé, Tebaldi, Nilsson). Her interest in music was sparked by her inclusion in many annual Florida All State choral performances and developed further as a member of the renowned high school chorus Dimensional Harmony, which included countless performances locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Her formal training culminated with acceptance into, and graduation from, a prestigious classical music conservatory. However, her desire to express herself and impart happiness to others with her own voice led her to veer off from the world of classical music and enter the intimate, personal world of the singer-songwriter.
Emily is currently working on her first album. Her project conveys a pensive, introspective, and hopeful vibe that will resonate with sensitive, introverted people who are not afraid to cry, and are looking for a meaningful artist who can help be a part of their identity and keep them going in life. The combination of pop and opera, along with a focus on introspection with a melancholy thread that colors even upbeat moments, provides a unique and memorable experience.
